  • Can anyone verify any of this stuff?

This is an email forward that I got. I'm all for 2nd Amendment freedoms to a degree, but these numbers and facts seem a little too slanted. Can anyone give some insight on all this?

    A LITTLE GUN HISTORY

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953,
about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded  up and exterminated.

    ------------------------------

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million
Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and
    exterminated.

    ------------------------------

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total
of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were
    rounded up and exterminated.

    ------------------------------

China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million
political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and
    exterminated

    ------------------------------

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000
Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and
    exterminated.

    ---- ------------- -------------

Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000
Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and
    exterminated.

    ------------------------------

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million
educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and
    exterminated.

    -----------------------------

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century

because of gun control: 56 million.

    ------------------------------

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by
new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their
own Government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500
million dollars. The first year results are now in:

    List of 7 items:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent.
Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent.
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300
percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the
criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in
armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the
past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is
    unarmed.
There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the
ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public
safety has decreased, after such monumental effort, and expense was
expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The
Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.

You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians
    disseminating this information.

Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes,
gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late!

The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them
    of this history lesson.

With guns, we are 'citizens'. Without them, we are 'subjects'.
During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they
    knew most Americans were ARMED!

If you value your freedom, please spread this anti-gun control message
    to all of your friends.

The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in
defense. The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more
important than either. The final weapon is the brain. All else is
    supplemental.

SWITZERLAND ISSUES EVERY HOUSEHOLD A GUN! SWITZERLAND 'S GOVERNMENT
TRAINS EVERY ADULT THEY ISSUE A RIFLE. SWITZERLAND HAS THE LOWEST GUN
RELATED CRIME RATE OF ANY CIVILIZED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!!!

IT'S A NO BRAINER! DON'T LET OUR GOVERNMENT WASTE MILLIONS OF OUR TAX
DOLLARS IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE ALL LAW ABIDING CITIZENS AN EASY TARGET.

    Obama promises to halve deficit

    President Obama
President Obama was addressing a conference of state governors

US President Barack Obama has said he will halve the budget deficit he inherited from the Bush administration by 2013.

The promise comes despite the huge amounts of money he plans to spend on his economic stimulus package.

Mr Obama also announced that he has put Vice-President Joe Biden in charge of overseeing the implementation of the $787bn (£540bn) package.

Former secret service agent Earl Devaney will be the plan's watchdog.

Mr Devaney's new job will be as chairman of the Recovery Act Transparency and Accountability Board and he will have to ensure that the stimulus funds are not wasted.

"He looks like an inspector, he's tough, you know he barely cracks a smile," the president said.

    Healthcare funding

The president also said that $15bn would be released on Wednesday to help states pay their healthcare bills.

Some states have been struggling to pay for their Medicaid programmes, which provide healthcare for people on low incomes.

"By the time most of you get home, money will be waiting to help 20 million vulnerable Americans in your states keep their healthcare coverage," the president said.

Speaking to a gathering of state governors, he warned that if they wasted any of the stimulus funds, he would "call them out on it".

I don't know about you, but I'd like to see him pull this off. Frankly, I think we should all record this statement, and throw it in his face in exactly 3.5 years, and see what he does. Then again, the response is already made. It will say something about not being able to finish his plan because we handed him a Republican Congress, or that he has to get re-elected to finish his grand scheme, and if we do, then it doesn't matter, cause he'll never be up for re-election anyway.

I posted the above on February 23, 2009.

    Now isn't that interesting?

  • Veteran Health Care and Obama

I'm so glad to hear we are getting past stupid partisanship. Thanks Mr. President!

  • We are killing ourselves.

Dollar slides after US Fed plan

    Dollars
Investors fear that more dollars means less value for each note

The dollar has fallen against all major currencies after the US Federal Reserve announced a plan to buy $1.2tn (£843bn) of debt to boost its economy.

The dollar fell by 2.9% against the euro and by 2.5% against the pound.

The US currency also declined against the yen, the Norwegian krone, the Australian dollar and Brazilian real.

The Fed's decision to buy debt means it is effectively creating new money, leading to concern from investors about the over-supply of dollars.

    Dollar rally ends

The dollar traded at $1.433 against the pound, its lowest since late February.

The US currency also had its biggest drop against the euro in over two months, to $1.3506 versus the 16-nation European currency. Against the yen, the dollar bought 95.55.

    HOW QUANTITATIVE EASING WORKS
Central bank expands money supply by using newly created money to buy assets from banks and other financial institutions
Aims to boost the economy by giving sellers of these assets money to spend on goods, services or more assets

The decline in the dollar ended its rally so far this year, which has seen the US dollar rise by more than 2% against most major currencies.

The Fed said on Wednesday that it would buy long-term government debt and expand purchases of mortgage-related debt to help stimulate an economy in the midst of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

It said it would buy up to $300bn worth of government debt, known as US Treasuries, over the next six months, as well as an additional $750bn of mortgage-backed securities to boost mortgage lending.

It also said it would buy debt issued by government-sponsored agencies such as Freddie Mac, which supports the mortgage market.

    Market reaction

BBC economics editor Stephanie Flanders said the decision to buy Treasury bills came as a "shock" to investors.

"Why have this new spending spree at all?" she said. "The answer may be that the Fed - and the administration more generally - is concerned that the apparent improvement in credit conditions the past few months is a false dawn."

The surprise registered in the stock market, as the Dow Jones shares index jumped 90 points on Wednesday.

Following the Fed's announcement the yields payable to holders of government bonds also fell sharply.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.5% percent from 3.01% - its biggest one-day slide since the Wall Street crash of 1987.

The Bank of England has already begun buying government debt to expand money supply - known as quantitative easing - while Japan said on Wednesday it would step up its purchases of government debt.

    Compliments of the BBC.

  • Political Colds

Since government bureaucrats can't handle a budget, and proved themselves abominable at waging war in Vietnam, let's let them legislate our health care too so that they can kill us all softly.

Too bad Great Britain has already shown us the bad side.

Let's think about this though. You don't have to pay for health care when you walk in the door. You just pay your higher taxes. But are you really wanting the care they provide? Personally, I'd be happy to keep paying someone to help me stay healthy, rather pay someone to legislate the doctor into letting me die.

    Cause Change. Think for yourself.

  • Learning to Trust God

    Original post at www.geaslen.com

I realize that I may be rehashing here something I’ve already discussed, but frankly, God has been teaching me so much about trusting Him, it’s been incredible. I’ve been trying to raise ministry support for just over six months now, and it’s been kinda depressing sometimes, when I look at how slowly my on-going support has been coming in. I realize the economy is bad, and money is tight, but this was kinda surprising.

More and more, though, I’ve been realizing that I’ve been relying on my own strength to raise support. I’ve been relying on my own wisdom and ability to find people who will support my ministry. I’ve been trying to accomplish God’s work for Him essentially. I knew all along that God was the one who would provide, but somehow, I felt like I could get it done, and just let the nebulous “working in people’s hearts” end of things to Him. You would think I’d have caught on before this, but no, I’m a stubborn one. God has been waiting for me to ask Him.

In the last week or so, I’ve been learning to ask Him first. And it’s been exciting. I was pretty well at the end of my rope last week, and then I went to a small Bible study. I had hopes of talking with people, and maybe building some relationships. I also really wanted to hear from God, because I was realizing just how much I needed Him. So, He showed up on Saturday night, just for me. He spoke through the people at that Bible study in ways I would never have expected. Not only did I end up sharing about my ministry, but they prayed for me, gave to me, and even asked me to come back and meet with them again! The rest of the week has been just like that. People from all over, in the most random places and ways giving, or committing to give. It has been overwhelming!

When God says He will provide, He will. But don’t get in the way. Let Him work, and just ask Him to keep doing it. And like the persistant widow, don’t stop asking either.

  • Valentines Day weekend

Since all of you are so desperate to hear all the tasty details of my weekend in New Hampshire, I thought I'd share a little to either placate you, or make you ask more questions.

I went to visit a fine young lady over Valentines weekend in New Hampshire. Unlike my dear friend Issy, I did not elope, despite my mother's fears otherwise.

Joy and I had a fine time visiting people, attending church, talking, running, and just being together. Her parents, sister, and brother-in-law came to visit on Sunday evening. We had lots of fun.

I'm back in Ohio now, and it's cold and rainy/snowy. I'm so ready to be done here it's not funny. There's a reason I moved away ten years ago, and haven't come back. The weather stinks.
